Pollinators working the night shift

You think of bees and butterflies when you hear the word pollinator, but a significant portion of pollination happens after dusk. From moths drifting over white blossoms to night-active beetles and flies, the night shift moves pollen in ways that are only now being properly measured.

Pollination is an ecological process that can run across the full day and night cycle. Some flowers depend mostly on daytime insects. Others get important help after dark. Many benefit from a mix of both, which makes pollination more reliable when weather or insect activity changes.

Moths are the main night workers

Across Canada, moths are among the most important nocturnal pollinators. Some are active by day, but many fly at night, visiting flowers for nectar and carrying pollen on their bodies as they move from plant to plant.

Moths are often overlooked because they are less obvious than bees during the day and many are active when people are not watching. Newer research methods, including infrared cameras, pollen analysis and DNA techniques, are making their role easier to measure.

The evidence is not that moths replace bees. They can visit flowers at different hours and extend the pollination window. If daytime weather limits bee activity, a calm evening can still give some flowers another chance to receive visits. In one bramble study, most flower visits happened during the day, but flowers exposed at night received more pollen on their stigmas. Night visits were almost entirely by moths. That doesn’t mean daytime insects were unimportant. It means moths may be doing more pollination work than their lower visit numbers suggest.

What night pollinators look for

Many flowers adapted to night visitors share a few traits. They are often pale, strongly scented and open or become more fragrant in the evening. White, cream, pale yellow and pale green flowers are easier to locate in low light. Scent becomes especially important when colour is harder to see.

Good garden examples include evening primrose, nicotiana, yucca, phlox, night scented stock and some lilies. Choose plants that suit your region and your actual garden conditions. Native plants are often especially useful because many moths and other insects depend on them as food plants, but the right plant still has to match the soil, moisture, light and space you have. White evening primrose, wild bergamot, buttonbush, cherries, plums, maples, oaks, snowberries and other woody plants can also support moths at different life stages.

That last point is important. Adult moths may visit flowers, but moth populations also need host plants for their caterpillars. A garden with nectar but no larval food is only doing part of the job. Trees, shrubs, grasses, native perennials, leaf litter and undisturbed edges all help support the life cycle.

Some beetles visit open flowers in the evening or at night. Flies can also be important pollinators, especially on open, shallow flowers where nectar and pollen are easy to reach. Some bees extend their activity into twilight, particularly during long northern evenings.

This is why it is better to think of pollination as a network rather than a single partnership between one flower and one insect. A plant may receive visits from bees, flies, beetles, butterflies and moths at different times. Some visits matter more than others, but the whole network adds resilience.

A garden that supports pollinators after dark does not need to look wild or neglected. It needs layers, seasonal bloom, some night fragrant flowers, reduced pesticide use and a little tolerance for the less tidy parts of insect life.

Artificial light changes the night garden

Outdoor lighting can interfere with nocturnal insects. Many flying insects use natural light cues to orient themselves. Bright nearby lights can pull them away from flowers, disrupt movement and change feeding behaviour.

White LEDs are a particular concern because many emit broad spectrum light with blue wavelengths that strongly affect insect vision and behaviour. The problem is not that a garden can never be lit, it’s constant, bright, poorly directed light.

The practical answer is to use light sparingly. Keep lights low, warm in colour and pointed downward. Use motion sensors or timers. Avoid lighting flower beds all night. Security and access lighting can still do its job without turning the whole garden into a permanent stage.

What about bats?

Bats are often mentioned in discussions of nighttime pollination, but not in Canada. The bats gardeners see in Canada are insect eaters, not nectar feeding pollinators. They do not pollinate garden flowers here the way some tropical bats pollinate plants such as agave, mango or banana.

That does not make them unimportant. Canadian bats are part of the same nighttime food web. They eat a lot of flying insects (yes, including the ones that pollinate plants; it’s all about balance!) and play a role in regulating insect populations

How to help nighttime pollinators

Plant some flowers that are useful after dusk. Include pale, fragrant blooms as well as native trees and shrubs that support caterpillars. Leave some leaves and stems in place over winter. Avoid unnecessary pesticides. Keep part of the garden a little less manicured. Most importantly, reduce nighttime lighting where you can.

A pollinator garden is not only a daytime garden. Bees may get the attention, but after sunset another shift begins.
